The Scam

Call scams are not a new thing, but more are surfacing to prey on people who want to help communities affected by the pandemic. This charity call scam impersonates genuine charities and fake ones that have a “dummy” profile online. These scams not only steal your money, but they divert much needed funds from legitimate causes. These fake charities often apply pressure or try to make potential victims feel guilty for not donating.

What You Can Do

Unfortunately there’s no foolproof way to screen calls coming into your business. Despite regulations and improvements to the security of the public telephone networks, scammers can still make it through to an owner, admin, or marketing department who could be a target. Here are some things to watch out for:

  • Check if the non-profit is listed with the IRS as such.
  • Make a note of the charity’s name and location, then donate directly by using their website or calling their main company number. Do not use any information provided by the caller (even the web address).
  • Never give out personal or payment information over the phone to someone who has called you.
