As promised, here are 5 more cyber security tips designed to help you and your family stay as safe as possible while you go about your lives online.
#1: You still need antivirus (yes, really)
As far as your work devices go, we’ve got you covered. But for those that you and your family personally own, do a bit of research and choose an antivirus you trust. And remember that a paid software is better than free, so spend a little now to make sure you don’t lose tons later. Need some advice on the best antivirus for your purposes? Just contact us. We’re familiar with a lot of them.
#2: Use 2-factor (aka multi-factor) authentication everywhere you can
Set it up to receive authentication codes via text message or on an authenticator app. You’d be surprised how many sites and applications offer this: everything from social media to your personal email. This is a great list to pick and choose from.
#3: Check your bank activity regularly
This is just one of those boring adulting things that’s absolutely necessary these days. Check your bank statements on a weekly basis. If you haven’t yet, enroll in online banking and set up multi-factor authentication for it.
#4: Keep your devices on lock down
Never leave your laptop, smartphone, or tablet unlocked while you’re away. Set up a timer on your device that automatically locks it after a few minutes of not being used. Make sure the password or code needed to access it is complicated and changed regularly, especially if you use it away from home or the office.
#5: Prioritize your most sensitive accounts
Secure them with strong passwords with 2-factor authentication. When thinking about the above, start with most sensitive. Something like:
- Online banking
- Money transfer apps like Paypal
- Amazon and other ecommerce website you use regularly
- Any account where you put in your card details
- Any account that has sensitive info (social security number, address, phone no., etc.).
